The hieroglyphic transcript presented here is based on a new transcription of the text published in the 1997 issue of the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology (JAE 83 pp55-68). This text is preserved on an 18th dynasty writing board that is now in the British Museum. The composition itself is dated to the Middle Kingdom. The JEA article includes some new readings as well as a hitherto unpublished copy of the text on an ostracon. The content of the text is very much on the theme of the troubles of the nation: "The whole land is in great distress, Nobody is free from crime; Hearts are greedy", writes the author. Sounds familiar! ;-) Note that lines marked with an "O " are parallel lines
taken from an Ostracon in the Cairo museum. It is interesting to observe
that the lines from the Ostracon are almost, but not entirely identical
to the copy from the Writing Board! |
