For this reason many dictionaries showed both the signes like a single letter a double face (expt. Budge Hier. Dict. =E2=80=93 Allen, ME). In the late Egyptian (XXVI Din.) s=C5=A1 / z=C5=A1 become zh / sh / s=C5=A1ht / sh=C5=A1t (cfr. WB, IV, 267 "geschreiben"), in demotic (cfr. J. Johnson, 59 "sh"), in coptic (sahidic) eiQei (Champollion, 397 "j=E2=80=99inscris"), alias ChAI (see var. in Crum, 338 A). The meaning of the sign Y3 for Allen is the verb 3ae-lit zh3 "write" / zh3w "writing", "scribe" =E2=80=93 ME, 466 and so on (Mistaken for lapsus in printing the sign Y3 at pag. 447, cit. op. showed z=E1=B8=AB3 instead zh3). I believe that the word "scribe" / "writing" etc. zh3 is correct only for the late ages (since XXVI Din. and after), not for Alt=C3=A4gypt. and ME, where the correct word is s=C5=A1 / z=C5=A1 (see WB, HWB, Faulk. DME, Gardiner, Budge etc. etc.). To whom it may concern cn with det. Y3, the word shows the meaning of "to paint" / "painting". The iconography shows a both of representation: palette for scriba (see word s=C5=A1 / z=C5=A1 see Budge II, 619 A-B) and palette for painter (cn =E2=80=93 see Budge 122B). Eyma" To: "Ancient Egyptian Language List" Subject: Re: AEL transliteration of scribe Date: Tue, 7 Oct 2008 14:54:54 +0200 There seems top be another word besides zX (written ), "scribe", that maintained an archaic spelling (i.e. N37 standing for X instead of the normal MK/NK S) for a very long time, namely the verb written "to be hot", which - seeing Coptic hmom (and some variant writings in hieroglyphic) - must stand for Xmm (which also fits Afroasiatic relations).
