From: "Robert Buchanan" To: Subject: AEL INtroduction Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2008 14:57:29 -0400 (EDT) I am looking forward to working in this discussion group. Any advise on beginners text would be greatly appreciated. I have yet to see any posts from the group (after a couple of days of being in the group). SO i hope this serves as a way of introduction and as a test of the connectivity to the group. Please forgive if this is a bad post. August and September are quiet months, with many members away from their desks, and the rest happy to wait until they get back. For beginners' texts, I can heartily recommend the home page of the AEL list, which had links to everything I needed when I first came to the group. I've since bought the James P Allen grammar - an easier read than the Gardiner, though not so beautiful a book. If you're a real beginner you might check out the GlyphStudy yahoo group, an online study group for amateurs learning the language. They've collected some really good resources. And Nicole Hansen's GlyphDoctors site, which offers real courses with instructors. Otherwise, browsing the AEL archives can be a lot of fun. Kamrin's book is probably one of the best introductions to the language for beginners on an easy level. Equally for beginners, but having a bit more depth is Collier & Manley's "How to read Egyptian Hieroglyphs'(1998)". I would start with those two, and if you wanted to continue after that, get yourself a copy James Allen's "Middle Egyptian". But don't start with that one: few people finish it, as it is so difficult. I will check out the sites you mentioned. Thanks again RHB ============================================================================== From: "Ben & Heidi Wallis" To: "Ancient Egyptian Language List" Subject: Re: AEL INtroduction Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 10:33:11 -0400 Robert, Another excellent set of books for learning hieroglyphic is the Middle Egyptian Grammar by James Hoch. It comes with a separate Sign List book, for quick and easy reference. I tried them all - Gardiner, Allen, C&M, etc., and the only volume that I really understood was Hoch. Additionally, don't assume you can learn using any of these books all on your own. Get some help through one of the online groups. Hoch's approach is quite different from Allen's. Less compartmentalised, but somehow easier. I understand, though, that his spiral-bound book is out of print, and though he announced in the late 90's that a softback (?) was in preparation, it never got published. Also his drill exercises - for which I would be grateful if somebody could sell me a copy - have never been published, though there were plans to do so. I think that Hoch's book with drill exercises as compendium could possibly be even more succesful than James Allen's excellent, but difficult grammar. Can Hoch be contacted ?
