I guess the word, like maat, has no precise equivalent in English, a very linear- thinking language, sometimes. I guess literally, s-Ax would mean "to make effective" for the work at hand. The actualization of divine favor that a god can bestow on a deceased (or perhaps living) student of the mysteries could perhaps be indicated by "empowerment", but that term has become too warped in modern use warrant consideration. Becoming an Ax in the Next Life was the guarentee of eternal existence. The goal of the spiritual activity is to become an immortal soul, dwelling among other immortal souls. I think that Dr. Allen said that the Ax is only realized when the kA and bA are united (though elsewhere it seems to have been the original spark of an individual's being). The ba, the ka, the ib and the shuit (shadow or shade) work together to protect the deceased. The deceased is identified with Osiris (becomes Osiris.) If the bA is the "moral power", the kA the "volitive power" and the ib the "balancing power" of the person, some experiential or evolutionary process seems ongoing. Osiris can sometimes be associated with the transformative power of fermentation, or the "sludge" that fertilizes. Yet, the Ax seems to have the freedom to move beyond such things. If academic philosophers like Naydler are correct and the ritual texts sometimes present encrypted (bz) arcana for living participants in the StAw, it may be to some extent a reflection on forces at work in the living personality, and not just a speculation about the afterlife.
