It's not to late to get in on the collations. Just send me an email, a first and last name, and permission to add you to our hmwkvolunteer list on Yahoogroups. You will not be left on the hmwk list permanently, just for the duration of the Scarab Translation project. If you want to send in the lines to be collated and don't want to join the Yahoo group, it's more difficult for me, but it can be done --post me off list with the same details and make sure to include a "Read Receipt" with everything you send me, as I tend to come up with missing mail more than my fair share of the time. And, of course, everyone is welcome to follow along at home, and send nothing. PS if you want to opt out of these collations I will be formatting them SCARAB COLLATION 1.1 so set your mail preferences to exclude our mailings if you would like to avoid the extra mail. Hi everyone: Can someone help me translterate and translate the following form of the verb "rdi", which I keep seeing on various painted wodden coffins? It is composed of the D37 ("rdi") arm, with an X2 ("t") sign nestled on top (not below it). This is followed by suffix pronoun "s" or "sn", but never "f". Initially, I thought it might be the infinitive, but Allen holds that the infinitive is typicalled spelled "rdit", and the infinitive just seems out of place in the context of a request for "everything good and pure", etc. The subjunctive or imperfective seem to be more likely candidates. I also considered the possibility of a transliteration of "dj.st" and "dj.stn". Can someone tell me if these Late Egyptian forms? Thank you for taking the time to read this post. Anyway such a dictionary is not ment to be a reference, but a good help for finding words... ============================================================================== From: "Jim" To: "'Ancient Egyptian Language List'" Subject: RE: AEL Re: Dictionaries Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2006 09:39:48 -0000 Yes, Paul, I realize that to make it a real reference work would take years but it is so good to be able to search by English word, MdC or transliteration and have a list of possibilities from which I can check in Gardiner or Allen. Gardiner's English-Egyptian dictionary has the problem of not giving the transliteration, just the hieroglyph version of a word. From there, you have to search through the sign list to get back to the Egyptian word in the Egyptian word list for the transliteration. Very long-winded! A problem which makes me tear my hair out is the number of signs which do not occur in Gardiner. I have to search through Beinlich or Wörterbuch to find these. It would be nice to have these included in your dictionary and the update facility would make this possible. Of course, to find these you would still have to know the transliteration of the sign which would probably be what you are looking for in the first place! This is why Gardiner split the signs into categories (man, animals, war and warfare etc.) but I think this would overcomplicate your dictionary. I really think your dictionary has a real niche for students of Egyptian Language like me. If you need any help, please ask and I will see what I can do. I'm pretty busy, though, I'm in my last year and have my Dissertation to prepare, plus Old Egyptian and 2 other modules. All the best and thank you again, Jim.
